Hard machining in mould and die making

Hard machining plays a very important role in mould and die making, but is also considered a major challenge. In recent years, some progress has been made with the development of milling cutters which are an alternative to time-consuming EDM and grinding and enable a process that can be faster, more precise and more economical.

Requirements and quality demands on milling cutters are high since accuracy and precision are of the utmost importance. Meusburger understands these needs and offers three different lines of hard milling cutters that are suitable for almost every application in mould and die making.

Torus and full-radius milling cutters up to 54 HRC

Torus and full-radius milling cutters up to 54 HRC are widely used in mould and die making and are considered to be true all-rounders, because they cover a wide spectrum of possible applications: thanks to their positive cutting angle, they cannot only be used on hard steels up to 54 HRC, but also on soft materials. Furthermore, these milling cutters are also perfectly suited to machining stainless steels and non-ferrous metals such as aluminium and copper.

End, torus, and full-radius milling cutters up to 63 HRC

These tools can be used on everything from high-quality tool steels from approximately 1,000 N/mm² onwards to hardened steels up to 63 HRC. They feature long service life and process reliability. Micro milling cutters from a diameter of 0.2 mm with exact tolerances down to the micron guarantee maximum component accuracy. Due to the large variety of different diameters, lengths and radii, you will find the right tool for most cases in our range.

End, torus, and full-radius milling cutters up to 67 HRC

The new generation of our hard milling cutters represents the next step in HSC machining in mould and die making. The tools offer maximum efficiency through high performance and wear resistance in the various high-quality materials. Thanks to the new coating in combination with the right carbide substrate, an optimised geometry, new rounded shank transitions and finely ground cutting edges, these milling cutters cover the highest demands in mould and die making. High-alloy, soft materials can be roughed with emulsion and finish milled with high precision, while high-strength and hardened materials as well as power metallurgical steels up to 67 HRC can be machined with maximum process reliability and performance while benefiting from a long tool service life. The coating adhesion, the fine coating surface and the very stable cutting edges enable higher surface qualities. The µ precise tolerances guarantee repeatability and reliability for your application.
