How to prevent coolant hose leaks

Coolant hoses and the associated couplers should be carefully selected and assembled. Find out how to prevent damages to coolant hoses and receive valuable tips from us on how to correctly handle your hoses.

What are the consequences of defective coolant hoses?

Damaged coolant hoses are more than just minor annoyances. They may lead to time-consuming cleaning work and interruptions in production and could even jeopardise the safety of employees.

Possible causes of damaged coolant hoses

  • Incorrect assembly
  • Poor coolant hose routing
  • Coolant hoses rub on other components during the closing movement
  • Kinking during crimping as the selected hoses are too short
  • No or infrequent inspection

How to avoid damages to coolant hoses and leakages

We have summarised the most important aspects that you should take into account both when planning a mould base and during the long-term use of coolant hoses:

Correct selection

The correct selection of coolant hoses and suitable couplers is essential for fail-safe operation and personal safety. Special attention must be paid to the respective area of application and the permitted maximum temperatures.

Layout during design

Whenever possible, you should consider the best possible temperature regulation layout during the design phase. That way you can already avoid bending radii that are too small or chaffing hoses during the planning stage. The value ‘R min.’ indicates the minimum radius that must be maintained for the optimal use of coolant hoses. You will find this information with every coolant hose in our range.

Professional assembly

Leaks can often occur where coupler and hose are connected. One possible cause for this is improper assembly, so a correct assembly process is essential for avoiding failures.

There are two different assembly methods:

Assembly without clamps or ferrules

For assembly without clamps or ferrules, the quick-fit coupling system is ideal. Due to the shape of the quick-fit nozzles and the special construction of the quick-fit coolant hose, no additional clamps or ferrules are needed for assembly.

Important: assembly without clamps or ferrules is only possible with the quick-fit hose and the quick-fit coupling system. All other hoses and couplers must be additionally fixed.

Fitting the hose onto the nozzle requires a bit more force, so we recommend using the hose assembly device E 21990.

Assembly with clamps or ferrules

Normal nozzles can be assembled using either hose clamps or ferrules.

Appropriate tools should be used during assembly.

Regular inspection

The correct routing of the coolant hoses should be carefully checked before starting up the injection mould. In addition, regular inspection is important during the production process. We recommend a visual inspection after each mould set-up or at least once a week.

The following aspects should be considered:

  • Check hoses for damage, cracks and abrasion
  • Check older hoses for sufficient elasticity and replace them if necessary
  • Make sure the couplers are intact
  • Check the range of movement of the hoses (look for signs of abrasion)
  • Check hoses for kinks in the nozzle area or in the bending radius

If there is a leak, it must be dealt with as quickly as possible to avoid downtimes.

Our tip for quick repairs:

Meusburger offers double nozzles (E 2069) or fittings with nozzle (E 2068, E 20685) and couplers (e.g. E 2200) for quick hose repairs on the spot.

Correct handling of coolant hoses: why is it so important?

It not only avoids production downtimes, but also ensures operational safety and thus prevents injuries. In addition to the correct part selection and professional assembly with the appropriate tools, the use of automatically locking safety hose couplers (e.g. E 22206) is recommended, especially at high temperatures.

Availability

If there are downtimes, it is important that production can be restarted quickly. If you don’t have the spare part, Meusburger delivers immediately from stock from the world’s largest standard parts warehouse.
