Hard machining in mould and die making

Hard machining plays a very important role in mould and die making, but is also considered a major challenge. In recent years, some progress has been made in this area with the development of milling cutters which are an alternative to time-consuming EDM and grinding and enable a process which can be faster, more precise and more economical.

Requirements and quality demands on the milling cutters are high since accuracy and precision are particularly necessary. Meusburger understands these needs and offers three different lines of hard milling cutters that are suitable for almost every application in mould and die making.

Torus and full-radius milling cutters up to 54 HRC

These tools cover a wide variety of applications. Due to the positive cutting angle, even soft materials can be machined very well. For this reason the torus and full-radius milling cutters up to 54 HRC are widely used in mould and die making and are regarded as all-rounders in this field: not only soft or hard steels up to 54 HRC, but also stainless steels and non-ferrous metals like aluminium and copper can be machined with these cutters.

Torus, full-radius and end milling cutters up to 63 HRC

The application area of these tools starts with the high-quality tool steel from approx. 1,000 N/mm² and extends to the hardened steels up to 63 HRC. The tools feature long service life and process reliability. Micro milling cutters from a diameter of 0.2 mm with µ exact tolerances guarantee highest component accuracy. Due to the large variety of different diameters, lengths and radii, you will find the right tool in our range.

Torus, full-radius and end milling cutters up to 67 HRC

The new generation of our hard milling cutters represents the next step in HSC machining in mould and die making. The tools offer maximum efficiency through high performance and wear resistance in the various high-quality materials. The new coating in combination with the right carbide substrate, an optimised geometry, new rounded shank transitions and finely ground cutting edges cover the highest demands in mould and die making. High-alloy, soft materials can be roughed with emulsion and finish milled with high precision. High-strength and hardened materials as well as PM steels up to 67 HRC can be machined with maximum process reliability, service life and performance.
Due to the coating adhesion, finest layer surfaces and high stability of the cutting, better surface qualities are achieved. The µ precise tolerances guarantee repeatability and reliability for your application.
