Knowledge management at Meusburger

In the past two decades, knowledge management has become an important element of our corporate culture. Alongside the three 'classical' factors of production - labour, capital, and land -, this fourth factor contributes to the success and survival of our company.

How does Meusburger use this knowledge?

Meusburger has more than 4,600 "knowledge documents" on various topics. Almost all these documents are based on the knowledge of employees and managers and are subject to continuous improvement. The knowledge is recorded, distributed, developed and saved. The basis for this process is Guntram Meusburger's “WBI method”. It follows a simple, pragmatic approach, connecting people, organisation and technology. The benefits for our employees are: fewer disturbances caused by phone calls, e-mails, etc., a higher level of motivation and satisfaction, and more efficient work. One big advantage is that knowledge management makes it easier for members of staff to stand in for colleagues who are sick, on holiday or on maternity leave, retiring or leaving the company.

The development of knowledge management at Meusburger

Knowledge management at Meusburger originated on one of Georg Meusburger's - the former managing director's - daily rounds through the production hall. He spotted a few handwritten notes on the machines and began to collect them. These notes were about the experiences of various members of staff and therefore important knowledge about the machines and processes as well as solutions to problems. 

Initially, this knowledge was recorded manually and organised in ring binders. Some years later, when the first computers were bought, a gradual digitalisation of the documents' recording and organisation began. Since then they have often been revised, updated and further developed. Efficient and effective handling of knowledge as a resource has been a key factor in the economic success of the company, especially during periods of fast expansion - and it still is today.

Outlook on the future

In order to sustain our market position, remain competitive and enhance our productivity, Meusburger will continue to rely on knowledge management. We are going to keep investing much discipline and energy in the recording and the distribution of knowledge and in the continuous improvement of our processes and organisational structures. Cross-linking the existing knowledge and adding more knowledge will be two major challenges in this context.


'Excellent Knowledge Organisation' Award

In the framework of the 11th Knowledge Management Days in Stuttgart, Meusburger Georg GmbH & Co KG was awarded the title 'Excellent Knowledge Organisation 2015'. A jury of six high-level experts in the field of knowledge management evaluated Meusburger as 'an excellent example of how practical knowledge management works'. According to a defined catalogue of criteria the jury decided whom to award the prize to. In the run-up to the award all the finalists were given the chance to present themselves and answer the questions from the interested congress audience.

The award is granted by the Society for Knowledge Management (Gesellschaft für Wissensmanagement e.V., GfWM) in cooperation with the Wissensmanagement journal (www.wissensmanagement.net). Both the initiative and the award 'Excellent Knowledge Organisation" are characterised by neutrality. The initiative is based on high transparency, high level of participation and a network of partners from the industry, universities and the media.


Meusburger is a member of the Society for Knowledge Management (GfWM) in Germany. The purpose of this society is to support the professional and responsible use of knowledge as a resource, and to stimulate the theoretical and practical development of knowledge management.


The method "Better integration of knowledge" (WBI) has been developed by Guntram Meusburger. It is based on 20 years of experience at Meusburger Georg GmbH & Co. KG and on the principle "from practice, for practice".
